Fillet Away Fish Mats started on a guided fishing trip on the Columbia River in July of 2015. Watching the guide fillet our fish (about 40 walleye) and then attempt to clean the AstroTurf mat left me thinking that there had to be a better solution.
I had 3 goals in mind when I started developing the fillet mat. First, it had to "grip" the fish to keep it from sliding around. Second, it had to clean quickly and easily. Third, it had to be made in the USA.
Before long, a mold was built and testing began. With input from several guides in the Tri-Cities, Washington Area, the mold was changed a number of times to achieve a mat that really held the fish well.
The mat does not have an interwoven or porous surface, which allows for easy cleaning, but we also focused specifically on the material that it was molded with. Fillet Away Fish Mats are molded from TPV, a material that does not absorb oil. The oil washes away when you rinse the mat.
Fillet Away Fish Mats are proudly made in the USA in Post Falls, Idaho. Producing them in the US does add to the cost, but going back to my original goals, I intend to keep it that way.
